There are actually two forms of the antioxidant compound Coenzyme Q-10: ubiquinone and ubiquinol. Both must be present for efficient adenosine triphosphate (ATP) production, which occurs in the energy-producing center of the cell known as the mitochondria, and both are essential to help fight free radicals and support heart health.
Aging, chronic illness and the use of statin drugs may deplete the body's ability to produce Coenzyme Q-10 ubiquinone and convert it into the active form ubiquinol. Research shows that this form of Coenzyme Q-10 provides superior absorption, up to 8 times more than ubiquinone. And since ubiquinol is pre-converted CoQ-10, blood levels remain high over a longer, sustained time period.
